HER STORY | Bold Voices, Amplified.
her story is a collection of interviews and personal journeys of bold women everywhere.
While most people don’t think of accounting as a “bold” or, as one of our contacts once put it, a “sexy” field, there’s more to the title than meets the eye. Foumberg, Juneja, Rocher & Co. (FJR) is our oldest partner, and they also happen to be one of the most highly-rated boutique accounting firms on the West Coast. After working directly with their CEO and head of HR, we wanted to know: who are the other faces behind that hard-earned reputation?
We talked to the women who choose to enter this line of work, and get to know their personal side as well - outside of crunching numbers!
Ten years ago Misha and Amit Gudibanda came to a realization - that their work in advertising and marketing for big brands and corporates was not really creating value or spreading joy. So they took a bold step and left their successful jobs to start an elevated paper crafts company called Sky Goodies in Mumbai, India. Their mission is to give people of all ages an opportunity to discover the joy of ‘Making’.
The Fem Word co-founder has loved following their journey for several years, and had the pleasure of speaking with them about a creating a global brand which proves that “craft is not an activity which is gender specific at all… anyone can enjoy craft; it is truly democratic and doesn’t even have any language barriers”.
Aida Murad is a D.C. based healer and artist with an incredible story. After a devastating diagnosis, Aida let art guide her out of despair and into a world of color, light, and healing that she never knew existed. Now she partners with amazing women like Ami Becker-Aronson and brings the power of art-as-healing to life through collaborative projects, personalized teaching, and uniquely moving works. This is part two of our series on the women behind the Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities program. You can read Ami Becker-Aronson’s story in part one!
Kirsten Quigley is the Founder & CEO of Lunchskins - a modern, eco-friendly, reusable, and affordable alternative to plastic baggies designed to reduce plastic pollution. The mission is to live a life less plastic - and since it was founded - over 3 billion plastic bags have been replaced with Lunchskins bags!
The Fem Word’s Monika Samtani sat down with Kirsten (her close friend of over 2 decades!) on Earth Day 2023 for a fun conversation about her journey as an entrepreneur, getting on retail shelves, and how it all started 15 years ago.
Ami Becker Aronson is a Feminine Design Strategist - someone who is looking at world problems based on feminine values. As the Managing Director of the Bernstein Family Foundation, she is helping to guide her family's historic legacy foundation, now in it's seventh decade in Washington DC. Ami is a cancer survivor, and after her Epic Climb for a Cause, she established the Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities Program which celebrates the power of art as a tool to heal.
The Fem Word's Monika Samtani talks with this incredible humanist about cancer, 'Adventure Philanthropy', and what's next in her life's journey.
If you were (or are) a Girl Scout - you know what it feels like to proudly wear your green sash full of leadership badges. The experience of selling (and devouring) the famous cookies is unforgettable…think Samoas, Thin Mints…what’s your favorite?!
Lidia Soto-Harmon has been CEO of the organization for 12 years. Girls Scouts has been around for 110 years, and she’s working to make sure that it continues to be a safe, inclusive place for young girls to belong, give back, and thrive.
As the Head of Privacy Policy at Instagram, Palak Sheth is uniquely positioned at the forefront of our current generation’s most pressing concerns. We had the privilege of sitting down with Palak to talk about social media, engagement, womanhood, the immigrant experience, and advocating for what’s important to her. Special thanks to our partners at Foumberg, Juneja, Rocher & Co. for supporting this interview.
WUSA9 News Anchor Delia Goncalves has covered it all - from shootings to homelessness, and everything in between. She shares stories with her audience about what’s happening in the world, but rarely do we get to see what’s happening in her personal world. During the pandemic, the discovery of uterine fibroids - and two months off from work - changed that.
Today, Delia is using her platform to share her own story with uterine fibroids. She’s become an advocate for those dealing with same condition - and is helping them to feel seen, heard, and empowered.
These four amazing teenagers are driving major real-world change in a variety of fields.
They work with The Knowledge Society (TKS), an international education program that empowers the world’s most promising teens to make real-world change. Aimed at helping to solve some of the world’s biggest current and future problems, the students engage with a wide range of contemporary topics including VR, AI, cryptocurrency and entrepreneurship.
TFW had the chance to sit down with these brilliant minds at SXSW 2022 in Austin, Texas - and we can tell you, these names are most definitely ones to watch in the future!
Shaila Lakhani Ohri is the Assistant General Counsel at Exelon, the nation's leading competitive energy provider. As a practicing attorney for almost 25 years, Shaila is recognized as a national ‘Rising Star’ for her dedication to the advancement of women and diverse leaders in the legal profession.
The Fem Word spoke with Shaila about growing up as an Indian immigrant in West Virginia, her life as a busy attorney and mom of three, and the beautiful realization “that my identity is the value proposition I bring to work and everything I do.”
THE WORD | Weekly Round-Ups & Stories from Around the World
The Word is a collection of articles, personal stories, and resources crafted and curated by the women of The Fem Word as well as other contributors.
Women have come a long way since the days of total financial dependence, and it’s important to reflect on how our relationships with money have changed in recent decades. In this article, TFW’s Managing Editor reflects on the perspectives, experiences, and lessons gained from her grandmother’s, mother’s, and her own generation.
The opioid crisis has stolen countless lives and ruined countless others. It is a complex, enormous, and overwhelming problem that touches every part of the USA. It is also a crisis that women play an important role in — both as victims and as the activists seeking to help them.
Women experience addiction differently. They face different consequences and endure different forms of stigma than men do. Their stories deserve to be highlighted and told so that we, as a society, can mount a truly effective effort against the addiction crisis.
Welcome to crisis corner. Population: all of us.
Midterm elections have already begun! The process can be stressful. Check your registration, your ballot status, and your polling location. Here’s a simple list of resources to make sure your voice is heard.
Many women find cardio workouts intimidating. Who has the time, the energy, or the motivation to break into a sweat every other day? We talked to our partners at Montgomery Cardiology and collected a few simple tips for maintaining cardio health from the comfort of your home. Maybe it’s not so scary, after all!
The Fem Word Contributors Meera Dahiya and Laura Hennawi were having an interesting conversation about their feminist theologies courses at school when they discovered that not only did their professors go to grad school together - but they were also past neighbors!
The realization led to a wonderful re-connection - and deep discussion - about being a woman in the field between Dr. Nicole Reibe, theology professor at Loyola University Maryland and contributor to Loyola’s Gender and Sexuality program, and Dr. Annie Selak, a feminist theologian and Associate Director of the Women’s Center at Georgetown University.
Since the fall of Roe v Wade in June 2022, the heartbreaking reality has set in about access to safe abortions and healthcare for women across the country.
The Fem Word met with Dr. Amita Vyas, Associate Professor at the George Washington University (GW) School of Public Health and leader in the public health space to discuss this life changing ruling and to gain a better understanding of how it will affect Americans of childbearing age and countless others, who it will affect the most, and what average Americans can do about the changing reproductive landscape.
There are a lot of stereotypes about women and their money. We’re big spenders who love to shop, we aren’t interested in stock reports or investment margins, we’re less likely to save… But are any of these stereotypes true? How do we REALLY shape up when it comes to our wealth and finances? Find out in this latest article!
In a majority opinion released in June of 2022 and delivered by Justice Samuel Alito, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld Mississippi’s Gestational Age Act which banned abortions later than 15 weeks or “in the case of a medical emergency or severe fetal abnormality.” With this decision, the Court overturned the precedent of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, both of which protected one’s right to an abortion (though with slightly different reasonings). TFW contributor Olivia Eisenberg goes looks at the decision in depth to expose the biases and corruption of the Dobbs Court.
Visible scars — especially facial ones — are often associated with “tough guys” or evil movie villains. These stereotypes can be harmful, limiting, and painful to face for real-life women and girls with visible scarring. It’s time to stand up for those with visible scars and tell the world that they’re not your movie villain. They’re beautiful, diverse, and complex people, and their scars are simply one more part of that complex beauty.
The Fem Word contributors Laura Hennawi and Saisha Kapoor are both rising juniors in college. Like many girls, when they transitioned from high school to college, they experienced a tangible change in the idea and expectations of the beauty standards expected of them. They were curious to see if their peers felt the same way about topics like beauty culture, conforming, reclaiming, over sexualization, guilt, and validation - plus confidence in girls at college. So they got together with some friends to share their experiences, and the result was ‘Real Talk about Beauty Standards in College’.
By now you’ve likely heard all about the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade by our current Supreme Court. With the decision comes a slew of trigger laws, proposals, and state-by-state decisions that have a collective impact on hundreds of millions of women and anyone else who happens to have female reproductive organs.
For most of us, it feels like a violation. It feels like fear. It feels like asking a thousand questions with no good answers, and it feels like anger. This article is part of a special TFW series taking a deep look at the Supreme Court abortion ruling..and it’s repercussions.
STEM education has been a priority for K-12 educators, but it was limited to things like algebra and computer science for a long time. Accounting has finally been added to the curriculum, and that’s a big deal for girls and women. We’re finally giving our girls the preparation they need for a financially successful (and safe) future!

FEM FLICKS | What We’re Watching
RAW (2016)
RAW is the debut feature film of French director Julia Ducournau and is a “coming of age horror film.” It revolves around a young girl named Justine (Garance Marillier), a lifelong vegetarian, starting her first semester of veterinary school. She is disciplined, having never eaten meat her entire life…until a hazing ritual requires her to ingest rabbit flesh. This moment is pivotal and incites intense cravings for flesh in Justine. Perhaps this is metaphorical, representing the horrors of changing, growing, and being on your own for the first time in life. There’s just one problem…Justine is craving human flesh. This film is not one for the weak, as it can be quite graphic. I highly recommend it to those who are interested in psychological thrillers or horrors. Julia Ducournau’s first film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Above all else, Raw’s music score is brilliant and on-point with subtle menacing undertones in the cinematography that put a chill in your spine.

Since the beginning, women have world-makers and world-shapers. We are teachers with wise hearts and warners clothed in the colors of blood, of famine, and of war. There are times when we take the forms of goddesses, divine and cloaked in mystery; there are other times when we are tricksters, spirits who use mischief and cunning to humble the hearts of wayward heroes, or to defeat monsters who threaten our people…
